The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is encouraging students to broaden their horizons by considering study abroad opportunities in less traditional locations. Aiming to expand student perspectives beyond major European cities, the UNL Office of Global Experiences will host an information session titled “Study Abroad Off the Beaten Path” on Tuesday, April 15, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Louise Pound Hall.
This event will provide insights into study abroad options in regions such as Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa—destinations that are often overlooked by students who typically think of cities like London, Paris, or Barcelona. Attendees will hear presentations on various study abroad locations, alongside firsthand testimonials from students who have studied in these areas.
Renae Ninneman, the global experiences coordinator, emphasized the value of studying in these less conventional regions. “Studying abroad offers students a unique opportunity to view their academic studies through a new lens and challenges them to rethink their understanding of the world,” she explained. “Students who return from such experiences often reflect on how they gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be American, how to navigate different cultural expectations, and how to become more adaptable.”
Ninneman, who has conducted in-depth research into global study abroad programs, noted that her recent travels to Eastern Europe, including visits to universities in Romania and Latvia, have fueled her enthusiasm for sharing these lesser-known opportunities with UNL students. “I’m excited to bring back information from these universities and encourage students to explore the incredible places I’ve visited,” she said.
While many students gravitate toward the more well-known destinations of Western Europe due to their popularity on social media, Ninneman believes that stepping outside this comfort zone can offer a more transformative experience. “Students often hesitate to study in places they find unfamiliar, but those who seek a truly challenging experience that shifts their Western worldview should look beyond traditional destinations,” she said. “This session is a chance to highlight the many extraordinary options in non-Western regions.”
The session aims to open students’ minds to the rich, diverse educational opportunities available in areas that are often overshadowed by the glamour of more popular study abroad spots.
