Bridging Global Experiences into Lifelong Learning: Highlights from the 2025 Florida Lessons from Abroad Conference

On April 4, 2025, the second annual Florida Lessons from Abroad Conference was held at the University of South Florida (USF), organized by the USF Judy Genshaft Honors College and USF World. The event brought together students from universities across Florida, including USF, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the University of North Florida, the University of Central Florida, and Stetson University, to foster international connections, share their study abroad experiences, and expand both academic and professional networks.

The conference provided a platform for students to explore how studying abroad has shaped their academic pursuits and career trajectories. Megan Braunstein, chair of the Florida Lessons from Abroad Conference, emphasized the lasting impact of international experiences: “Your study abroad experience has the capacity to impact your careers, your interests, your personality traits for the rest of your life,” she said, encouraging attendees to embrace a culturally enriched lifestyle.

Student presentations at the conference covered a wide array of topics. Presenters shared personal stories of navigating the challenges of solo travel in Western Europe, adjusting to the cultural shifts in Germany’s walkable communities, and managing the anxiety that often accompanies studying abroad for the first time.

One standout presentation by USF student Jeanette Janvier explored the differences between the U.S. and Canadian public health systems. Using a culinary metaphor, she likened healthcare systems to a recipe, where success depends on a delicate balance of components—many of which may be in short supply.

Colin Jeffers, a senior at USF, shared his experience studying abroad in Osnabrück, Germany, focusing on the positive effects of walkable infrastructure and reliable public transportation on local community dynamics. “The sense of walkability and how that builds community really blew me away,” Jeffers reflected. “It provided a focal point for the community, allowing even foreigners like myself to feel a sense of belonging.” He compared his experience in Germany to the walkable campus environment at USF, highlighting the role that infrastructure plays in fostering connection.

Mikayla Alman, another USF student, recounted her travels to Japan, where she engaged with students in Tokyo and Osaka. Despite a language barrier, Alman discovered a shared love of media that bridged cultural divides. “Even though I was in an entirely different culture with an entirely different language, media helped us build connections,” Alman said. “Through globalized media, we can learn about different values, histories, and traditions—it’s a fascinating way to connect with others.”

The conference also featured representatives from USF World and World Strides, a partner organization that provides study abroad internships and service programs for students who have already participated in international study. World Strides, which sponsored the conference lunch, plays a crucial role in expanding global learning opportunities for USF students.

USF Global Learning offers a variety of study abroad programs, including faculty-led programs and partnerships with trusted affiliates worldwide. Students can also pursue academic exchange programs, global internships, and virtual global engagement opportunities, such as the Global Citizens Project and the Peace Corps Prep Program. The Global Career Accelerator program, which allows students to gain international experience without leaving campus, is another key initiative designed to enhance students’ global engagement.

Megan Braunstein concluded the conference by emphasizing the importance of international experiences in today’s interconnected world. “Now more than ever, it is crucial to have international experiences,” she said. “Engaging with diverse cultures prepares students to navigate varied circumstances and connect with people from all walks of life. Intentional reflection on these experiences will only benefit students as they move forward in their careers.”

The 2025 Florida Lessons from Abroad Conference successfully highlighted the value of global learning, offering students insights into the transformative power of international exposure both academically and professionally.
