Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced a significant revision to the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) rules, benefiting foreign students. Starting November 1, 2024, the requirement for graduates of college bachelor’s and master’s programs to study in specific fields will be eliminated. This change gives students more flexibility and opportunities to work in Canada after graduation.
Removal of Field-of-Study Restrictions
Previously, international students had to complete their studies in fields considered to be in long-term shortage to qualify for a PGWP. With the new rules, this field-of-study restriction will no longer apply, providing students with more choices in their academic programs. This revision is especially advantageous for those enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs at the college level, as it offers them a broader range of academic fields and career paths.
Language Proficiency Requirement
To qualify for the PGWP under the new rules, students must demonstrate proficiency in either English or French. The required level is Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 7 or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) 7, ensuring that foreign graduates are adequately prepared to join the Canadian workforce.
Student Reactions to the Changes
The change affects students who apply for study permits after November 1, 2024. Nimish C, a master’s student at Fanshawe College, shared his relief: “The field of study restrictions being lifted directly affects me. While I am happy with this change, the language proficiency requirement feels a bit daunting.”
Trishala, a University of Toronto master’s student studying data science, also welcomed the update. “This is a positive change, particularly for students like me who were concerned about field restrictions. Now, we have the freedom to study what we want,” she said, though she acknowledged that the language requirement might be challenging for some.
