China Issues Study Abroad Alert, Cautions Students on Risks in Certain U.S. States

by Daisy

China’s Ministry of Education issued its first study abroad alert for 2025 on Wednesday, advising students to exercise caution when considering studying in specific U.S. states. The warning comes in response to a recent bill passed in Ohio that includes clauses detrimental to China, imposing restrictions on educational exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and American universities.

The Ministry urged students to thoroughly assess security risks and remain vigilant when selecting educational institutions in states affected by the bill.

In a related development, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism also issued a travel risk alert for Chinese citizens visiting the United States. This advisory highlighted concerns over the worsening economic and trade relations between China and the U.S., as well as growing domestic security issues in the U.S.

Meanwhile, China’s Customs Tariff Commission, under the State Council, announced a significant tariff hike on U.S. imports, increasing the tariff from 34 percent to 84 percent, effective April 10. This move follows the U.S. decision on April 8 to impose reciprocal tariffs on Chinese products, raising them from 34 percent to 84 percent as well. The Customs Tariff Commission criticized the U.S. escalation as a “grave mistake,” asserting that it infringes on China’s rights and undermines the global rules-based trading system.
