A group of 20 first-year students from Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University, are currently spending their second semester in Italy, earning half of their honors credits while immersing themselves in the rich culture and history of the country. This unique experience is made possible through the Barrett Global Honors Flex program, which pairs students with a Barrett faculty member for the journey.
The program is designed to foster personal growth and provide students with a transformative academic experience. It offers them the opportunity to begin their academic journey with an international perspective, combining learning with exploration.
A Life-Changing Experience
Violet Lenz, a film major at the Sidney Poitier New American Film School, reflected on her experience, stating, “I’ve learned that I can do a lot more than I think I can. It’s easier to figure things out than it seems. I think it’s helped me grow so much as a person, building my confidence and expanding my worldview. It’s definitely life-changing and gives you real-world experience.”
A Comprehensive Academic Program
During their time in Italy, Barrett students will complete 15 credits, nine of which will be taught by Barrett Honors faculty member Joseph Foy. Foy shared his observations on the trip: “There have been so many rewarding moments with the students. The ‘aha’ moments when they see an ancient ruin or statue and connect it to their learning about history or art are truly special. These moments of recognition often come unexpectedly.”
Exploring New Perspectives
Joana Cano, a first-year sports journalism major at the Downtown Phoenix campus, highlighted the value of the program in broadening her academic horizons: “I’ve learned a lot about the Italian perspective on journalism in my International Journalism class. I want to cover the FIFA World Cup or be a sideline reporter for the Mexican National Team, so it’s been cool to explore the global side of journalism.”
Developing Global Perspectives
Jason Briggs, senior director of Barrett’s Office of Global Initiatives, emphasized the program’s goal: “The objective of this program is to provide first-year honors students with the opportunity to develop global perspectives and gain cultural experiences by studying abroad early in their academic careers.”
Maya Richman, a Spanish major at The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, also reflected on her personal growth: “Traveling here has been so different from trips with my parents. I’ve learned to become completely independent and figure things out on my own, just like they would have done.”
The Barrett Global Honors Flex program provides students with a rare and invaluable opportunity to enhance their education and personal development through study abroad experiences, setting the stage for a deeper understanding of the world.
