The University of Otago, New Zealand’s oldest university, is gaining significant attention from Indian students, not only for its renowned programs in health sciences, computing, and business but also for its unwavering commitment to sustainability. Jason Cushen, Director of International at the University of Otago, spoke with The Free Press Journal about the institution’s offerings and its growing appeal to students from India.

According to Cushen, the University of Otago’s long-standing reputation—celebrating 156 years this year—makes it a leading academic institution in New Zealand. “We offer a wide range of disciplines, with particular strength in health sciences, including the country’s only medical school,” he said.
The university’s appeal lies not only in its academic credentials but also in the vibrant international student community, which includes about 2,200 international students, with approximately 150-170 from India. Indian students are drawn to diverse programs such as the School of Computing, which offers courses in artificial intelligence, software development, and systems design, all of which align with the growing tech industry in India.

Cushen highlighted the university’s strong emphasis on student well-being. With 85-86% of students coming from outside Dunedin, Otago ensures that its international students receive the necessary support for both physical and mental health. The university’s health and counselling services are well-prepared to assist students in need, including those continuing medical care or counselling from home.
Research and Career Opportunities
Otago is known for its research-active faculty, with every academic staff member involved in research. This includes hands-on opportunities for undergraduate students, such as research internships during the summer. For postgraduate students, particularly in Master’s and PhD programs, research forms a core component of their academic journey.
The university also boasts an impressive post-graduation employment rate of 95%, with many students securing jobs or pursuing further studies within six months of graduation. Additionally, New Zealand’s post-study work rights enable international students, including those from India, to stay and work in the country for several years after completing their degree.
