by Daisy

Sheffield, UK – The University of Sheffield has officially opened admissions for its Master of Science (MSc) program in Computer Science with Speech and Natural Language Processing, with the course set to commence in September 2025.

This cutting-edge program focuses on the fast-evolving fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), computer science, linguistics, and machine learning. It aims to equip students with a deep understanding of core theories, algorithms, and models that power transformative technologies such as speech recognition, real-time machine translation, sentiment analysis, and conversational AI assistants.

Blending disciplines such as machine learning, signal processing, linguistics, and computer science, the program is tailored for students with a background in engineering, computer science, or closely related fields. Those interested in linguistics, phonetics, computational techniques, and AI will find the curriculum especially relevant.

Program Highlights

The course includes a strong focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP), with modules covering both foundational techniques and advanced tools, including the use of state-of-the-art AI platforms such as DeepSeek and ChatGPT.

Students will gain practical experience through a mix of hands-on lab sessions, interactive lectures, and computational exercises. A key component of the degree is the individual dissertation project, which accounts for one-third of the program. During this phase, students will work closely with faculty members on original research in areas such as NLP, machine learning, and speech recognition—preparing them for careers in AI development, language technology, and academic research.

Upon graduation, students will possess expert-level skills in natural language processing, machine learning, digital signal processing, and speech production and perception, making them highly sought-after in both industry and academia.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:

A minimum of 60% in an undergraduate degree from a recognized university in a relevant subject.

Acceptable degree fields include Computing, Computer Science, Mathematics, or other engineering-related disciplines.

An IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall, with no individual component below 6.0.

Scholarship Opportunities

The University of Sheffield is also offering 75 International Postgraduate Taught Merit Scholarships for the 2025 intake. Each scholarship is valued at £10,000 and will be applied towards tuition fees for eligible postgraduate taught programs starting in September 2025. These scholarships are available to all new international students who meet the academic criteria. Applications must be submitted by 1:00 PM (UK time) on Monday, 12 May 2025.

For students passionate about AI and human language technologies, the MSc in Computer Science with Speech and Natural Language Processing offers a gateway to impactful and dynamic careers in a rapidly expanding field.
