Student Showcases Irish Study Abroad Experience with Art Exhibition

by Daisy

Second-year College of DuPage (COD) student Elliah Chamberlain brought the beauty of Ireland to campus with her art exhibition, “A Glimpse of Emerald Isle.” Displayed at the Wings Student Art Gallery from January 31 to February 26, the exhibition showcased over a dozen pieces inspired by her study abroad experience. Using gouache, acrylic, and watercolor, Chamberlain captured the rich landscapes and cultural essence of Ireland.

Art as a Tool for Cultural Immersion

Chamberlain emphasized the impact of creativity on travel experiences.

“When you move through the world with a more creative stance, you open yourself up to more interactions and perspectives,” she said. “In Ireland, this allowed me to gain deeper cultural immersion and experiences.”

Her artistic approach led her to paint in various locations, including pubs and parks. Some locals even commissioned her for artwork, including an engagement ceremony painting.

COD’s Horticulture Study Abroad Program in Ireland

Since 2022, COD has offered a two-week horticulture program through its Field Studies and Study Abroad program. The course focuses on Ireland’s ecological environment, climate, food systems, and sustainability practices.

“Food production, sustainability, and ecology vary greatly depending on location,” said Connie Kollmeyer, Adjunct Faculty in the Sustainable Urban Agriculture program at COD. “I wanted students to gain a broader perspective by learning about these topics in a global context.”

Last year, 19 students traveled to County Donegal and Bundoran, Ireland, where they engaged in hands-on activities related to horticulture and sustainability.

“Ireland quickly becomes a home away from home for the students,” Kollmeyer added. “They know they will always be welcomed back.”

Scholarship Supports Study Abroad Experience

Chamberlain was one of five students awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a U.S. Department of State program that supports Pell Grant recipients studying abroad. The scholarship covered her travel expenses for the Ireland trip.

As part of the scholarship requirements, students must complete a follow-on project demonstrating how their study abroad experience impacted their education. “A Glimpse of Emerald Isle” served as Chamberlain’s project, encouraging others to explore new cultures and create art while traveling.

“With the gallery, I wanted to inspire people to travel and create,” she said. “Art allows you to connect with the world in a unique way.”
